About Denmark

Denmark is much more than a fairytale land

Denmark is located in the Northern Europe and is one of the world's oldest monarchies. The reigning monarch, Queen Margrethe II, traces her origins back to the Viking Age around the year 1000. 5,5 million Danes reside in Denmark which many perceive as a fairytale land because of the wonderful tales of Hans Christian Andersen, the fantastic classical melodies by Carl Nielsen, the Little Mermaid residing in Copenhagen alongside the country’s many old towns, castles and historical monuments. With this in mind, it is understandable that heritage and culture play an important role in modern-day Denmark along with the aspiration for innovation and know-how in the 21st century. Therefore, Denmark is much more than just a fairytale land.

We are proud to say that Denmark occupies a leading position when it comes to ecology and Denmark has the world's most developed market for organic food. In fact, in 2009 Denmark was awarded "Organic Country of the Year" at the annual BioFach fair in Germany, which is the world's leading trade fair for organic products.

We recommend:

A strong welfare state and a happy population

Danish society rests on the foundation of the Danish Constitution of 1849, and the political system has since been characterized by broad solutions across the political divide. Denmark is often cited as one of the world's best countries to live in. The strong welfare state ensures economic equality in society and the virtual non-existence of corruption, while polls repeatedly show that the Danes are among the happiest people in the world.

The key goals are sustainability

Creating a green and sustainable society is one of the key goals for Denmark.

More than 20 per cent of Denmark's energy already comes from renewable energy, and the goal is to reach 100 per cent by 2050. Much of the renewable energy comes from wind turbines, where Denmark is a world leader when it comes to developing new technology.

Denmark is a leader within the organic farming

Denmark is also an ancient agricultural country with rich traditions, which today is challenged by increased requirements of modern consumers. Especially health, the environment and animal welfare are at the forefront of the Danish consumers' attention. As a result, Denmark has evolved into a leader within the organic farming which means that the Danish food industry is characterized by a combination of old traditions and new modernized work places and work practices. Several events are held every year to raise awareness of ecology and sustainability. For instance, in 20 years now a national week with intense focus on organic food and organic farming has been held all over the country. "Den Økologiske Uge" (Ecology Week) "Den Økologiske Uge" includes events where you can visit the Danish organic farms, communal eating of organic food, extra focus on organic food in stores as well as on social media and much more.
